How to mix collagen powder without lumps

If you've tipped a scoop of collagen powder into a glass of water and watched it sit on the surface in a pale, dusty raft, you're not doing anything wrong. The powder itself is the reason. Here's what's happening and how to fix it.

Why collagen powder floats and clumps

Hydrolysed collagen peptides are fine, low-density particles. When they hit a body of liquid, surface tension holds them up before they can absorb any water. The outer layer of the clump gets wet and sticky, sealing the dry powder inside. Stirring at that point just moves the clump around rather than breaking it up.

Cold water makes this worse. The particles are less soluble at lower temperatures and the clump has more time to set before it disperses.

The paste-first method

The fix is to wet the powder before it meets a full volume of liquid.

  1. Put your 10g scoop of collagen into a mug or glass.
  2. Add a small splash of liquid — roughly a tablespoon, no more.
  3. Stir immediately and firmly until you have a smooth, lump-free paste. This takes about 20 seconds.
  4. Add the rest of your liquid (around 250ml) and stir again.

Because every particle is already wetted, the powder disperses evenly rather than clumping. The paste stage is the only step that matters.

Hot dissolves more readily than cold

Both our bovine collagen and marine collagen are hydrolysed — the long collagen chains have already been broken into short peptides during manufacturing. Heat does not undo this. You can add either powder to hot coffee, tea, or soup without any concern.

Hot liquid also speeds up dissolving. If you're adding collagen to a hot drink, use the paste method with a small amount of the same hot liquid, then pour the rest over. It will dissolve in seconds.

Cold water works too, but give it more stirring time, and the paste step becomes even more important.

Don't add the powder to an already-full glass. There's no room to stir properly and the powder has nowhere to go but the surface.

Beyond drinks: other ways to take collagen powder

Because both powders are unflavoured and dissolve cleanly, they disappear into food as well as drinks. Some options that work reliably:

  • Soups and sauces. Stir a scoop into the pot while it's still on the heat. Dissolves immediately. Adds nothing to the taste.
  • Porridge. Add to the oats before cooking and stir in with the liquid. No texture change, no flavour.
  • Baking. Works in pancakes, muffins and bread. Mix into the dry ingredients first so it distributes evenly before the wet ingredients go in.
  • Smoothies. Add the powder to the blender cup before the other ingredients. The blending action handles the mixing for you.

Marine collagen is particularly well suited to food use. Despite coming from fish, it has no detectable fish flavour — a common assumption that puts people off unnecessarily.
