How to mix plant protein without it going claggy
If you have switched from whey to a plant-based protein and ended up with something closer to paste than a drink, you are not doing it wrong. Plant proteins behave differently from whey, and the standard advice — one scoop, 150ml, shake for ten seconds — does not transfer.
This guide uses Pump House Faba Bean Protein Isolate as the example throughout, but the principles apply to most plant proteins.
Why plant protein is thicker than whey
Whey is a dairy by-product that has been processed into protein for decades. The industry has had a long time to optimise it for mixability, and most whey concentrates now contain emulsifiers — usually sunflower lecithin — specifically to help the powder disperse.
Plant proteins do not have the same processing history. They are also structurally different: the proteins in faba bean, pea or rice behave more like starches when they hit liquid, absorbing water and swelling rather than dispersing through it. The result is a thicker, denser texture at the same liquid volume.
This is not a quality problem. It is just physics. The fix is straightforward.
200ml is the minimum for a 30g serving
The single most common mistake is using the same amount of liquid you would use with whey. For a 30g serving of faba bean protein isolate — two scoops — start with at least 200ml. If you want something closer to the consistency of a whey shake, use 250–300ml.
A rough guide:

Add the liquid first, then the powder. Powder into an empty vessel tends to clump at the bottom before the liquid can reach it.
Blender versus shaker
Both work, but they suit different situations.
Shaker
A shaker is fine for a straight protein drink — water or juice, two scoops, 250ml minimum. Use a shaker with a wire ball or a mesh insert rather than an empty bottle. Shake for longer than you would with whey: 20–30 seconds rather than ten. If you see powder sticking to the bottom, add another 30–50ml of liquid and shake again.
One method that helps: add a small amount of liquid — around 30ml — to the powder first and stir it into a smooth paste before adding the rest of the liquid. The paste stage eliminates dry pockets that resist mixing.
Blender
A blender is the better choice if you are making a smoothie or if you have found shaker results inconsistent. Thirty seconds at medium speed produces a completely smooth result. It also opens up combinations that a shaker cannot handle — frozen fruit, oats, nut butter — without the texture becoming unwieldy.
If you are making smoothies regularly, a blender is worth the extra washing up.
Plant protein in baking
One area where plant protein has a genuine advantage over whey is baking. Whey protein tends to go rubbery when heated — the proteins set quickly and tighten, which can make protein pancakes or muffins dense and chewy in an unpleasant way.
Faba bean protein isolate holds texture better in heat. It behaves more like a flour substitute, which means protein pancakes, oat bars and muffins come out with a reasonable crumb rather than a sponge that bounces back when you press it.
A starting point for baking substitution: replace around 20–25% of the flour weight with protein powder. Going higher than that without adjusting the liquid content usually produces something too dry.
What to mix it with
Faba bean protein isolate is genuinely neutral in flavour. It does not have the earthy aftertaste that pea protein is known for, and it does not taste of beans. This means it works with a wider range of liquids than most plant proteins.
- Water — clean and unfussy. The protein flavour comes through clearly, which some people prefer.
- Juice — orange, apple or mango all work. The natural sweetness of the juice is usually enough.
- Plant milk — oat and almond both mix well and add a small amount of additional carbohydrate.
- Smoothie base — frozen banana and berries with 200ml of liquid is a reliable combination. Use a blender.
Avoid very acidic liquids in large quantities — some citrus juices at high concentration can affect the texture slightly. Diluted juice is fine.
