Protein powder without soya, dairy, gluten or nuts
Most protein powders fall into one of three categories: whey (dairy), soya isolate, or pea protein. If you are avoiding dairy, that rules out whey. If you are avoiding soya, that rules out the majority of plant-based options. Pea protein is the usual fallback, but it carries a distinctive earthy aftertaste that not everyone tolerates well.
Faba bean protein isolate is a different option. It is free from soya, dairy, gluten and nuts, and it does not taste like legumes.

The protein content
Pump House Faba Bean Protein Isolate delivers 87.6g of protein per 100g. A two-scoop serving (around 30g) provides approximately 26g of protein. The 1kg bag gives you around 33 servings.
That figure is comparable to whey concentrate and higher than most pea protein powders, which typically sit in the 75–80g per 100g range.
Authorised protein claims
Because faba bean isolate qualifies as a source of protein (more than 12% of energy from protein), the following authorised claims apply:
- Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass.
- Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass.
- Protein contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
These claims apply to protein as a nutrient. The conditions of use are the same for each:
| Claim | Condition of use |
|---|---|
| Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass. | The food must provide at least a source of protein: at least 12% of energy from protein. |
| Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass. | The food must provide at least a source of protein: at least 12% of energy from protein. |
| Protein contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. | The food must provide at least a source of protein: at least 12% of energy from protein. |
Taste and mixing
The neutral flavour is worth stating plainly, because it is the thing people are most sceptical about. Faba bean does not have the beany aftertaste associated with pea protein. It mixes into water, juice or a smoothie without flavouring the drink.
It is thicker than whey, so use around 200ml of liquid per two-scoop serving — more if you prefer a thinner consistency, or blend it if you are adding it to a smoothie. Using the same volume of liquid you would use for whey will leave it claggy.
It also holds texture in baking, where whey protein can make things rubbery. If you use protein powder in cooking, that is a practical difference worth knowing.
