Collagen not from beef: the marine option

Most collagen supplements are bovine — derived from cattle hides or bones. For some people that is not an option. The reasons vary: religious dietary law, a personal decision to avoid beef, or simply a preference to know exactly what animal the product comes from. Whatever the reason, it is a real exclusion and it has a straightforward answer.

Marine collagen is sourced from fish. It is not bovine. That is the relevant fact, and the rest of this page explains what else you should know before buying.

Where marine collagen comes from

Our Marine Collagen Powder is hydrolysed collagen derived from wild-caught fish. "Hydrolysed" means the collagen has been broken down into smaller peptides during processing — this is what allows it to dissolve in liquid rather than sitting in clumps at the bottom of a glass.

The powder dissolves cleanly in hot or cold liquid. Despite coming from fish, it has a neutral taste — this surprises most people, but it is consistently the case. A 250g tub gives you 25 servings at one 10g scoop per serving.

Type I only — what that means in practice

Collagen is categorised into types based on where it occurs in the body. Marine collagen is Type I only. Bovine collagen typically contains both Type I and Type III.

Whether the difference matters to you depends on why you are taking collagen. We are not able to make claims about what either type does in the body — no authorised claim exists for collagen under UK food supplement law, so we will not speculate. What we can tell you is the specification, and you can decide.

Contains fish — allergy information

Marine collagen is derived from fish. It is not suitable for anyone with a fish or shellfish allergy. If you have a fish or shellfish allergy, this product is not for you — there is no processing step that removes the allergen.

If bovine collagen is also off the table and you have a fish allergy, there is currently no collagen option we can offer you. We would rather say that plainly than sell you something you cannot use.

Neither marine nor bovine collagen is vegan

Collagen is a structural protein found in animals. It cannot be derived from plants. There is no vegan collagen — the molecule does not exist in the plant kingdom.

Some products are marketed as "vegan collagen boosters", but these contain no collagen. They are typically vitamin C or amino acid supplements with a marketing angle. We do not sell them under that name because it would be misleading.

If you follow a vegan diet, collagen supplements — of any source — are not appropriate for you. We would rather you know this before purchasing than find out after.

Mixing and use

One 10g scoop per day. Stir into around 250ml of water, juice, coffee or tea — hot or cold, both work. It does not taste of fish. If you are pairing it with a vitamin C source (fruit juice, vegetables, or a separate vitamin C supplement), that is a reasonable habit, though we are not making a claim about why.
